bread is bad for ducks
The Canal & River Trust once estimated that 6 million loaves of bread are thrown into UK waterways by people feeding the ducks. Sadly bread is bad for ducks!
However, at many popular duck feeding spots you’ll often still find people using bread – not just a few stale pieces of bread, but whole loaves of bread that we can only assume they’re buying especially for the ducks. Good for bread baker sales, really bad for ducks.
So we wondered, could bread bakers do something to help with this problem? Say with a little plea on their packs asking people to not feed it to ducks? We tweeted this to Hovis, Warburtons and Kingsmill:
Hello @hovisbakery @KingsmillCare @Warburtons any chance of a “please don’t feed this to ducks” note on your bread packs? People feeding your products to ducks aren’t doing the ducks much good….and their litter isn’t the best advert for your good names! pic.twitter.com/cqnY43jeQz

And here’s what they all said:
Oh no! That’s not nice to see, sorry to see there has been an issue with littering. We’ll definitely pass this feedback back to our team to review – thanks for letting us know.

Hello! We are also really disappointed to see this littering and will pass your comments onto our marketing team who take environmental issues very seriously and will look into this. Thanks for getting in touch.

Hi! Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Please be assured that we will pass this information onto our product and packaging development team.
The Bakery Team.

Well, they’re all looking into it. Hopefully genuinely so. If not, there may be call for some follow-up tweets/letters!
The above photo was taken over the weekend on a bridge over the Stourbridge Canal near Brierley Hill. A little further along the tow path was yet another person apparently throwing an entire loaf of bread into the canal.
Can all those already in the know about how bread is bad for ducks PLEASE keep sharing the “no bread” message. There’s some information about why bread is bad for ducks here – and some ideas for alternative foods to offer ducks here. Also, since it’s important to not overfeed ducks even with healthy foods, there’s some tips for responsible wild duck feeding here >
Together we can stop bread flowing along the canal, polluting the water and harming the health of our feathered quacking friends – and all their watery neighbours.
