Stratford Upon Avon Ducks: To feed, or not to feed, that is the question!

Stratford-Upon-Avon

Team Quack Snacks enjoyed a wonderful sunny Bank Holiday Sunday in Stratford-Upon-Avon, birthplace of William Shakespeare – so you’ll have to forgive us for corrupting a quote from Hamlet: “To feed or not to feed, that is the question”.

In the places where most people congregate, not to feed is most definitely the answer. There are too many people, potentially offering too much food, likely to cause a riotous messy crowd of ducks, swans and geese. It’s not good for them, or the people trying to enjoy an ice cream or picnic amongst the chaos.

Feeding wild ducks responsibly sometimes means not feeding them at all. However, there are well paved walkways along the river Avon well away from the crowds where feeding ducks very sparingly is less likely to cause chaos and mess. But please, make sure it’s not bread, crisps or chips!

Feeding the ducks on the River Severn in Bridgnorth, Shropshire

Team Quack Snacks parked up in Bridgnorth’s Low Town and enjoyed a lovely walk beside the River Severn in Severn Park.

Sadly, there were also people dumping carrier bags full of bread for crowds of ducks and geese by the road bridge on the Low Town side of the river. On the other side, an ice cream shop were offering broken ice cream cones as duck food. Sugary broken cones can’t really be considered as healthy duck food – in fact, you’d be paying to throw the shop’s rubbish into the river!

Please don’t throw bread or rubbish in the river for ducks – and instead consider some of these alternatives.

Feeding the ducks at Mary Stevens Park, Stourbridge

After a delicious lunch and latte in the No.92 Coffee Lounge, the Quack Snacks team enjoyed a leisurely stroll around Stourbridge’s Mary Stevens Park – including a stop to offer some Quack Snacks Duck Food to the local wildfowl!

We were pleased to find a great sign advising people about the problem of feeding bread to the ducks. It’s also good to see they advise feeding only small amounts of food – overfeeding too much of a good thing can still be bad! Unfortunately, a short walk from the sign we passed people tossing a loaf of bread into Heath Pool.

Feeding the ducks on the River Severn in Worcester

Team Quack Snacks enjoyed an amble around the shops in Worcester, before heading to the walkway along the River Severn.

Sadly, those who insist on throwing whole loaves of bread at our feathered friends were out and about too – the spot by the Copenhagen St Car Park became a bun fight of bread feeders and swans. There are signs stating that fishing isn’t allowed to protect the swans….but we didn’t see anything warning about the bread problem.

We walked further along the river to a spot by the Diglis House Hotel, where a couple of swans were soon joined by half a dozen others…..and then some mallards! A little left and right scattering of Quack Snacks saw the two groups happily snack apart.
